Typically, a Saddle Up event consists of a trail ride, but it can also include horse shows and other equestrian events. Horse enthusiasts and the general public alike, have joined together to hold Saddle Up events across the country to help in the hospital’s fight against childhood cancer and other catastrophic diseases.

St. Jude depends on community-based fundraising programs like Saddle Up for St. Jude to continue the hospital’s groundbreaking research and lifesaving care. The daily operating cost for St. Jude is nearly $1.4 million, which is primarily covered by public contributions.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is internationally recognized for its pioneering work in finding cures and saving children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. St. Jude is the first and only pediatric cancer center to be designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute. Founded by late entertainer Danny Thomas and based in Memphis, Tenn., St. Jude freely shares its discoveries with scientific and medical communities around the world. St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance. No child is ever denied treatment because of the family’s inability to pay. St. Jude is financially supported by ALSAC, its fundraising organization. For more information, please visit http://www.stjude.org/.

By participating in the Saddle Up for St. Jude event you have the opportunity to earn great prizes while helping the children of St. Jude. Prizes are earned based off of the amount of donations you collect.

Participant Prizes
All participants collecting donations receive a certificate of appreciation regardless of how much they raise.

If participants raise:
$20 or more they receive a Saddle Up lapel pin.
$35 or more they receive a Saddle Up T-shirt and lapel pin.
$75 or more they receive a Saddle Up hat, T-shirt and lapel pin.
$150 or more they receive a Saddle Up pomfleece blanket, hat, T-shirt and lapel pin.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; We had marvelous weather, wonderful riders and horses, and awesome volunteers! Melanie Bell of Dartland Farm in Iron Station, NC did a fabulous job of judging our competitors and an offering advice for improvement for the upcoming West Central District Horse Show. Thanks, Melanie, for all of your pointers! We also had an awesome volunteer crew for this show; many thanks to Liberty Koontz, Emily Seaford, Mcakenzie Kuhns, Micah Furr, Michelle Stevenson, and Zachary Stevenson (who has a possible future career as a sports announcer)! Thanks also go to Mt. Members of 3 Cedars 4-H Club and East Equine Explorers 4-H Club, along with many 4-H family members and friends raised $2773.50 for St. Jude Childrens Hospital. These are record highs in RACE 4-H history, both in number of riders and funds raised. It is wonderful to see how our 4-H clubs, families, and friends continue to give their time and money, even in hard economic times. Blessings to all that contributed and participated.

A special thanks goes out to the Patterson Family for continuing to be such wonderful hosts and allowing us to enjoy their beautiful farm. Thanks also goes out to Starbucks Coffee in Mooresville for their wonderful donation of hot chocolate and coffee. If you are in Mooresville, stop by Starbucks and tell them how you appreciated the warm drinks on a wonderful fall day! Thanks also to all of you who donated various items and other goodies we all enjoyed during the day! We look forward to the next St. Jude Trail Ride!

Jude. Well I got the answer to my question as the day unfolded.

The weather was perfect, volunteers all arrived to cheerfully check coggins tests, set up jumps and trail class obstacles, open and close gates, hand out ribbons, assist with registration, post patterns, help riders with questions and issues, and offer words and cheers of encouragement. All enjoying the day's events while working with horses and riders, both young and young at heart.

An adult rider from Taylorsville bringing his horse to its first show informed us that he had seen our flyer at Latta Platation and felt like it would be a good show for a debut. This made my older daughter feel like the time she had taken to distribute information worth her efforts. It is a wonderful thing in life to know that you help others achieve their goals, no matter how small your job may be. I didn't have the honor of speaking with him before he left that morning, but I hope that he had a successful day.

We had several new young riders this horse show and it is always wonderful to watch them work through their fears and anxiety and leave with smiles and a feeling of accomplishment. One of our young riders was participating in her second show, last October being her first one. She left last October with one ribbon, a blue one for trail class, feeling somewhat disappointed and overjoyed at the same time. Returning to her second show, she took home the High Point Grand Champion Ribbon for the Novice Western Division. However, it was not the improvement in her riding skills that impressed me the most, but a comment made to her mother at the end of her first class. It was a class of seven riders, of which only six received a ribbon. Grace received her first ribbon of the day, a 1st place ribbon in a horsemanship class. I wish I had a picture of her grin when she was announced winner of the class. But what made a lasting impression on me that day were Grace's words as she exited the arena gate, "I know exactly how she feels (speaking of the child in seventh place), Mother, go tell her she did a great job!" Not only are we teaching horsemanship and showmanship skills to our children through 4-H activities, we are teaching compassion and empathy. What wonderful by-products!

Another moving moment during the day was our lead line class, where our younger riders and those with special needs are lead around the arena aback their faithful furry four-legged friends by their trainer or parent. We had an exceptional lead line class this day and our wonderful judge, Amanda McGuire, did a fabulous job of placing this class. Tango escorted our most handsome rider, Carson H., the rider with the prettiest seat, Sidney S. was escorted by Rosa, astride Red was Dillon S. with the best smile, and the happiest rider of the day, Clark was escorted by the hard working Dido. All leaving the arena with blue 1st place ribbons to a swarm of paparazzi waiting to capture this special moment on film. Thank you Amanda for such a special touch!

After all of the "serious" classes had been completed we moved into the competitive games classes. This is always an exciting part of the day where riders race around poles and barrels, try to hold eggs on spoons while riding their horses, and try to keep that buck under their thigh as they gallop bareback around the arena. The reason this is my favorite part of the day is that I get to observe a group of people that may have started the day as strangers, end the same day as new friends and cheering each other to the finish line!

As the day ended, and three of the four adults that are the backbone of this show were packing up to head home, the question I asked myself this morning was asked again by someone other than me. As we stood there watching the last of the horses load up and head out we were able to reflect on all of the amazing things we had experienced on this day and we knew the answer! We hope to see you all in October!

Many thanks to all of our riders that allow us this wonderful opportunity to see the important things in life, to Sara Drake (our awesome 4-H Agent), to Judge Amanda, her mother and Caitlin (exceptional ring steward),to our sponsors, to Craige and Zach, to all the 4-Hers that volunteered their time on Saturday, and especially to our furry four-legged friends that help teach us wonderful life lessons.

Now for the facts!

Novice English Division

Grand Champion - EVERY RIDE. . .
is an educational video on head injury prevention is a must for all riders, instructors, horse clubs and parents of children who ride.

Narrated by William Shatner, this professionally produced, approximately 20 minute, educational video demonstrates the need for SEI* protective headgear. Interviews blended together with excellent footage of horses in a wide variety of sports show the benefits of wearing the proper helmet--as well as the unfortunate consequences of riding without one.

Experience, training and the quietest horse in the world are no guarantee of safety. It's the height that puts the rider at risk -- sometimes fatal risk. A rider's unprotected head can receive over 1000 G's of force in ANY fall, at ANY speed -- simply because the fall begins from on top of a horse or pony. Today's energy absorbing, SEI* certified helmets can reduce this force to minimize or prevent injury.

Most riders are unaware of the genuine risk that riding presents. Too often a rider's enjoyment of this breathtaking sport comes to an abrupt end because they lacked the information needed to convince them to wear a helmet.

What others are saying about "Every Time. . . Every Ride"

"This video is effective and important. It should be required that every riding instructor own a copy and every riding student be required to view this video." - Charlotte Kneeland, Director, American Riding Instructor Certification Program

"...a video every member of the horse community must see. It shows the reasons why everyone should wear SEI* certified protective headgear when preparing to mount or when mounted on a horse." - Doris Bixby Hammett, MD, Secretary, American Medical Equestrian Association

This equestrian oriented video will enable riders to make an educated decision regarding their need for protective headgear. And they do need protection.

But people in my sport don't wear helmets. . . "Every Time. . .Every Ride. . ." includes Western, English, driving, cutting, dressage, jumping, gaming and pleasure footage. Let's face it, no horse is totally safe.

*The Safety Equipment Institute certifies helmets which meet or exceed the American Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM) F-1163(A) standard for equestrian headgear. All helmets shown in this flyer are SEI* certified. No headgear can protect the wearer against all foreseeable impacts.

Every Time. . . Every Ride. . . is presented by Washington State University Cooperative Extension and Washington State 4-H Foundation.

Riding Safety Headgear Policy

FOR ALL 4-H MEMBERS!! Effective 2010, certified helmets MUST be worn by ALL 4-H'ers while mounted!

I-F.23. Riding Safety Headgear Policy

The North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service 4-H Horse Program (“the 4-H Program”) requires all riders to wear protective headgear that meets or surpasses current applicable ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials)/SEI (Safety Equipment Institute) standards while riding during all County, District and State 4-H Horse Program sponsored events and activities. This headgear must be properly fitted, properly worn on the top of the head, and worn with the harness securely fastened. Events and activities covered by this Rule include, but are not limited to: 4-H Horse Shows, 4-H Horsemanship Camps, 4-H Trail Rides, and 4-H Horse Drill Teams.

The term “riding” as used in this Rule (I-F.23) shall refer to the riding or driving of a horse or pony in a 4-H sponsored event or activity. The term “rider” as used in this Rule refers to a person engaged in riding. The 4-H Horse Program and the show committees, officials, judges, extension personnel and volunteers associated with the 4-H Horse Program shall enforce this Rule during 4-H Program events and activities. Any rider violating this rule will be immediately prohibited from further riding, and shall be barred or disqualified from the event or activity in which the rider is engaged at the time of the violation. It is the responsibility of the rider, and the parent or guardian of the rider, to confirm that the headgear worn by the rider complies with safety standards set forth above; is properly fitted, fastened, and worn; and is in such a condition that it would protect the rider in the case of an accident. The 4-H Horse Program and the show committees, officials, judges, extension personnel and volunteers associated with the 4-H Horse Program are not responsible for checking headgear worn by riders for compliance with this Rule.

The 4-H Horse Program makes no representation or warranty, expressed or implied, concerning the headgear worn by any rider during a 4-H Program sponsored event or activity. In particular, the 4-H Program makes no representation or warranty concerning the safety performance of any headgear worn by any rider. The 4-H Program cautions riders that death or serious injury may result despite wearing such headgear as all equestrian sports involve inherent dangerous risk and as no headgear can protect against all foreseeable injuries.

USEF's New Varsity Lettering Program for High School Equestrians

Deadline Extended for USEF's New Varsity Lettering Program for High School Equestrians

You don't have to be a record-setting quarterback, pointguard or track star to letter in high school sports anymore. The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) is writing a new chapter in the recognition of high school sports - one that honors Equestrian athletes. The USEF's High School Equestrian Athlete program will offer specially designed emblems and pins, exclusively for equestrian athletes in grades 9-12.

"High school equestrians have earned their place among the most dedicated athletes," shared John Long, USEF Chief Executive Officer. "Not only are they putting in long hours to train for and compete in the sport they love, they do so while taking the concept of teamwork to the highest level, forming a partnership with a horse to achieve their goals. "Until now, most high school students haven't had the opportunity to letter in equestrian, simply because there are so few school-sponsored programs," Long continued. "We look forward to the beginning of a new tradition, where equestrians are able to earn the recognition they deserve, along side their fellow athletes and classmates. "

The new High School Equestrian Athlete program is open to equestrian athletes in all breeds or disciplines who are enrolled in grades 9-12, and are currently USEF members, or become USEF members. The program will run June 1 - May 31 of each year, and will honor those who document their training and competition involvement by awarding emblems and pins. These are designed to be worn on existing high school letterman's jackets, or any jacket of the athlete's choosing, as a rite of passage and symbol of achievement. This new program requires enrollment and documentation prior to lettering. For more information, or to complete an enrollment application, simply visit this link on the USEF Youth Programs page:

http://www.usef.org/documents/Youth/HighSchoolAthlete.pdf

Please note: The deadline has been extended for ALL High School students who would like to enroll in the program this year, to earn their letters on a shortened schedule. The new deadline for enrollment is March 1, 2010; requirements must be completed and submitted by May 31, 2010.

For more information on the USEF's High School Equestrian Athletes Program, please contact Lauren Fahey at lfahey@usef.org or Mary Vance at mvance@usef.org .

WINTER FUZZY FUN SHOW POSTPONED

JANUARY 9 WINTER FUZZY FUN SHOW IS POSTPONED!!!

Due to construction delays, Ellis Event Center is currently without power and bathrooms.

What an awesome day! It was great to see the all of the horse enthusiasts today. The weather was perfect, except for the small shower early in the morning, we had a fabulous judge (THANK YOU! CHUCK!), and we had a record number of riders! I haven't had time to do an official count but I know from the show numbers that we had at least 55 riders. Our annual costume class continues to be impossible to place due to the creative participants. We had The Headless Horseman, Santa Clause, a gift wrapped horse ridden by an elf, an angel riding a devil (doesn't this situation occur often?), a "hunter horse", and a pair that were pretty in pink... just to name a few. So... all were crowned winners with treat bags for the riders and horses.

Congratulations to our High Points Champions!!!

English

Novice Grand Champion - Savannah B.

Novice Reserve Champion - Eden E.

Junior Grand Champion - Savanah H.

Junior Reserve Champion - Maddy V.

Senior Grand Champion - Taylor P.

Senior Reserve Champion - Abbie G.

Adult Grand Champion - Amy H.

Adult Reserve Champion - Stephanie S.

Western

Novice Grand Champion - Amy H.

Novice Reserve Champion - Savannah B.

Junior Grand Champion - Sarah F.

Junior Reserve Champion - MaddyV.

Senior Grand Champion - Abbie G.

Senior Reserve Champion - Madison K.

Adult Grand Champion - Kristen H.

Adult Reserve Champion - Greg T.

Thanks to all of you for your patience as we dealt with this unexpected and exciting turnout. The morning session will begin at 9 a.m. and wrap up by 12 p.m. and the afternoon session will be from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. Bring your horse and learn how to safely compete in trail classes. This clinic will focus on acquainting your horses to trail obstacles seen on the trail and at the horse show. We will concentrate on desensitizing your horses and communicating with them in such a way as to decrease their apprehension of negotiating obstacles. The cost is $15 per horse/rider or $5 per auditor. Space is limited to 10 horse/riders per session.
