Saddle Up for St. Jude is a fun, family-oriented fundraising event based around horseback riding that raises money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Typically, a Saddle Up event consists of a trail ride, but it can also include horse shows and other equestrian events. Horse enthusiasts and the general public alike, have joined together to hold Saddle Up events across the country to help in the hospital’s fight against childhood cancer and other catastrophic diseases.

St. Jude depends on community-based fundraising programs like Saddle Up for St. Jude to continue the hospital’s groundbreaking research and lifesaving care. The daily operating cost for St. Jude is nearly $1.4 million, which is primarily covered by public contributions.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is internationally recognized for its pioneering work in finding cures and saving children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. St. Jude is the first and only pediatric cancer center to be designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute. Founded by late entertainer Danny Thomas and based in Memphis, Tenn., St. Jude freely shares its discoveries with scientific and medical communities around the world. St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance. No child is ever denied treatment because of the family’s inability to pay. St. Jude is financially supported by ALSAC, its fundraising organization. For more information, please visit http://www.stjude.org/.

By participating in the Saddle Up for St. Jude event you have the opportunity to earn great prizes while helping the children of St. Jude. Prizes are earned based off of the amount of donations you collect.

Rowan Advisory Council for Equestrian 4-H Clubs (R.A.C.E. 4-H) held the first of two annual horse shows on Saturday, May 7 at Ellis Event Center. We had marvelous weather, wonderful riders and horses, and awesome volunteers! Melanie Bell of Dartland Farm in Iron Station, NC did a fabulous job of judging our competitors and an offering advice for improvement for the upcoming West Central District Horse Show. Thanks, Melanie, for all of your pointers! We also had an awesome volunteer crew for this show; many thanks to Liberty Koontz, Emily Seaford, Mcakenzie Kuhns, Micah Furr, Michelle Stevenson, and Zachary Stevenson (who has a possible future career as a sports announcer)! Thanks also go to Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church for providing concessions and to Craige Farmer and his staff at Ellis Park.

A new division for gaited horses was added to the R.A.C.E. class list this year and had a wonderful showing of horses at this show. Our English and Western Divisions were also well represented. We had a total of 39 riders and a fabulous crowd of spectators and supporters. Thanks to all of you who came out and participated! Hope to see you all at the October 15 show.
